Fourth Wing: What Makes the Book ‘The Read’ of the Year?

fourth wing

Fourth Wing is a new adult fantasy read released in May of this year. Though the instant hit doesn’t need any introduction, as if you are a part of the publishing world, a bookstagramer, or simply just a reader, chances are you’ve heard about this novel somehow.

The book became an instant hit by the author Rebecca Yarros and has already become a favorite for many readers. Just four months after the release, the book has more than 372,000 reads and thousands of reviews on Goodreads alone!

What’s the Story about?

Prepare to see dragons and dragon riders overcome challenges with their enemies and among themselves. We enter Basgiath War College, where situations are extremely tough. Will Violet graduate or die?

The possible reasons for becoming an instant hit:

The Dragons

The first thing that comes into my mind that could be the reason is… The dragons. You get a lot of them in the book. They have such unique personalities from one another.

I think there hasn’t been any mainstream new adult high fantasy book surrounded just by sassy dragons, and that’s what sets this book apart.

The Main lead- Violet

Our female lead, Violet’s character as a War School Dragon Rider, is strong. She may not be the top physically fit at Basgiath War College, but she is mentally fast and quick-witted.

I think the readers connect to her as she doesn’t get everything right the first time, making her humane.

Aside from the fitness part, she has a pretty real way to convey her thoughts, making her seem… real. As readers, we really like to see a strong female lead who doesn’t give up and speaks her mind in a very normal language like we do.

The Romance

How can we forget it? I think if you want a best seller in your hands in the fantasy genre, then you need to have a strong Romance in it.

The author cleverly combines Violet and Xaden’s powerful characters, giving us all the points to ship them. They are both fearless, smart, and different but the same in their hearts and intentions.

It’s an Enemies to Lovers trope, and we all know fantasy lovers like it a lot. It is one of the most popular ones that fans like myself love.

The Humor

Adult Fantasy novels are not known to have the most sarcastic remarks spoken by their characters. Here, most of the characters and creatures are smart and humorous.

It doesn’t affect their decision-making, and they make tough decisions when needed as the situations occur. Thus, it makes their personality amazing!

At last

Sometimes, the hype is right. It has a mixture of things people adore and themes that have just been fully explored in an adult fantasy genre.

If you are a fan of the book, the good news is that we fans don’t need to wait years to get the novel’s sequel as Iron Flame, part Two of The Empyrean series, hits the shelves this year in November!
