Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Focuses On Action Than Story

Newly Released in July this year, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning is the latest seventh installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise. In this close to 3-hour movie, we see Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) again on a world journey to save the future of humans.

Why the delay

After many delays due to COVID-19, this was the most expensive installment in the Mission Impossible world. Like its counterparts, there are a lot of high-action-packed scenes where there are crashes of buildings, cars, trains; you name it! Here’s Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning review, one of the most essential and expensive movies of 2023:

Plot

In the movie, we see Ethan Hunt and his gang of IMF (Impossible Missions Force) as they have to find two keys that, joined together, can stop the Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning AI system. The gang moves from one part of the globe to another to stop an evil AI, “The Entity.”

Characters

As Ethan Hunt, Tom Cruise again presents us with strength and intelligence. After nearly 30 years, the actor has embodied the character of the intelligent IMF spy, and they are the same for fans.

Hayley Atwell’s acting, the new female lead of the series, is adequate, as one can expect from a high-budgeted movie like this. She and other actors in Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning got praise for acting before. She plays an essential character as a thief in the film.

The recurring actors in Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning are Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg, Ethan’s friends and partners. Rebecca Ferguson and Vanessa Kirby return with their characters once again as well.

The main antagonist of the movie is not a person. It’s “The Entity,” a highly advanced AI system that can destroy the world. And thus, even though Esai Morales got credit as the main antagonist, viewers of the movie can note that he’s only a worker for The Entity.

Pros

The music score

Lorne Balfe returns as the composer and wows. The background suits the scenes perfectly. The action themes are energetic, and we get slow-motion scenes with perfect tunes.

The Action Director of the movie, Christopher McQuarrie, deserves all the recognition he gets and more. Because as I see it, the movie relies so much on the action sequences.

Special praise goes to the Mission Impossible 7 train scene, even though there are a lot of action and fast sequences. This one stands out because it’s so nicely shot and fun!

Cons

The Duration Of the movie is its most significant disadvantage.

With 2.5 hours and a budget of nearly $300 million, the movie has plenty of scenes and places to see the money spent. That’s the reason why editing was so laid-back. They just had to include all the spectral but expensive scenes.

Editing is in dire need

So many scenes are shot in slow motion that it gets redundant.

The Writing

While we get loads of action sequences in “Mission: Impossible 7”, the slow plot doesn’t match them. It feels like because of the Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning AI, the movie shies away from exploring its characters.

Even if the director focused on something other than action, it is evident that the story of Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning lacks compared to the visuals we get from the backdrops and fights. In Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning, actors can act but can’t pull off a movie with a slow screenplay.

Another thing is that (and this is minor) the introductory entries of the characters, including Tom Cruises’ as Ethan Hunt, are flat. What we can expect from this high action (with many far-fetched scenes) is a fantastic entry, right? But, sadly, there is no drama and intrigue there.

Conclusion

The fans of Tom Cruise and the franchise would go for Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning! It has been among the top anticipated movies for some time now, and If you love action, then it’s a treat. But, unlike its predecessors, the film could be stronger in writing.

You’ll be pleased to hear that the sequel, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part Two, will come to theatres in June next year!
