Sweet And Survival Poetry By Amanda Lovelace: ‘The Mermaid’s Voice Returns In This One’

The Mermaid’s Voice Returns In This One is the last poetry collection in the famous series by the popular American poet Amanda Lovelace. In the collection of some 200 pages, we get poems and prose on different significant parts of life. It includes survival, second chances, sometimes romance, and more.

Something new in this collection is that we also get a lot of poems from other authors, like Nikita Gill, Orion Carloto, and more, in the book’s last section. And even a foreword by Lang Leav, a very popular female poet like Amanda.

About the Author

Amanda Lovelace is the author of the poetry series collection Women Are Some Magic, which deals with many different parts of her life. Her first part of the series, Princess Saves Herself In This One, was the Goodreads Best Poetry Award winner 2016!

About the Poetry

There are a lot of poems about sexual violence, survival, victims, and other deeper emotions. This is from the experiences of the author.

A lot of homages in the book. For example, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, The Chronicles of Narnia, and more. These were some of the interesting parts for me!

The subjects that are in the novel are sensitive matters. It totally depends on the choice of the person who has gone through the same experience and how they are dealing with it. They can overcome it in any way that they find most suitable.

Not every piece of poetry will wow you, but each piece has a perspective we can see happening to people. There’s romance, unrequited love, there’s something for everyone.

We get from her notes at the end that writing this book and pouring all these feelings into writing was her way to heal. Others can be different from it, and I like that the author has specified that in the ending notes.

What I did not like

The number of poems on sensitive themes is way more than on any matter. These are based on incidents in the past, and the author will be able to connect more with a lot of prose. Poetry is all about the readers’ connection and feelings toward the pieces. One might fall in love with a piece due to their experiences; the other might not even get it. And there’s nothing wrong with it.
